So, yesterday morning Kaden started telling me that his eye was itchy. I looked at him and didn't notice anything out of the norm, so I just brushed it off thinking it was a little bit of allergies since it is spring. So then I sent him to school at 11:00. I was volunteering at his school at 1:00, and when I got there I asked him what happened to his eye, since it was all red under the eye, and almost looked like he had a black eye. He told me nothing had happened, and then I really looked at it and it was all red in his eye as well. So I took him home with me at that point, thinking that he had pink eye which is very contagious. Well within a few hours his eye was looking worse and worse, and the redness around the eye was spreading and it was swelling up as well. I remembered that my younger sister Brooke had had a very serious eye infection when she was a baby, and I remembered the sypmtoms being close to what was going on with Kaden, so I called my mom to ask her about it, and she told me to take him to the dr. immediately, since it sounded exactly like what Brooke had. So we went to the urgent care, I wanted to go there rather than the ER, in case it wasn't anything serious, and also since we currently are lapsed on insurance, and it won't start till April 1st. So we got to urgent care and waited for an hour and a half and 3 people were sent in ambulances to the hospital while we were there, I didn't think that was boding well for the day!! So once we went back the dr. looked at his eye, and immediately thought that it was perioptical cellulitis. So then he took cultures, and also gave him a shot of antibiotics in his bum (he was very brave). Then he's saying that he needs a CT Scan, and that if it's too progressed he will need to send us to one of the specialty children's hospitals in Portland. So at that point I was freaking out that my child has a potentially fatal illness. It was a scary drive to the hospital for the CT. But Brandon and our bishop met me over at the hospital and gave Kaden a blessing, and I felt much calmer after that. Then Kaden had to get an IV, so that they could put contrast die into his blood for the CT, and even with having to have it done on both arms (the first time didn't work) he was a trooper. Then he had his scan, and he told me that it sounded like a car :) At that point we headed home to wait for the dr to call with the results from the scan. He called right when we got home to tell us that there was no abcess and that the infection hadn't gone to his brain, and we were just so relieved and grateful. And today, he woke up looking much better. He still has a goopy eye, but the redness and swelling around the eye are going way down. I'm just so grateful for the priesthood. And also for our fantastic friends. Our neighbor Susan took our other 2 boys without a question. And our friend Brent went and picked up the other antibiotic that we needed to start giving Kaden last night. It's great to know that you have friends who will drop what they are doing to help you out when you need it. I'm also very happy that mmy little Kaden is OK.

I had cellulites in my arm around my elbow. It grows fast and is just crazy, but his eye is much scarier! Holy cow, I'm glad he's okay!
wow... that is scary! i would totally freak out if something like that happened & it sounded like you pretty much kept your cool! glad he's feeling better!
Good job at being a trooper yourself, Tara. That is super scary. I am glad that he had the blessing when he did. I am sure that saved him.
It's actually amazing how you keep your cool when you need to. You always imagine yourself flipping out, but when you have to you stay brave so you don't scare your child. I was starting to almost cry at the urgent care when the dr. was telling me everything, but I didn't want to scare Kaden, so I stopped myself. And btw, these pictures where taken the next day when the eye was much much better.
I'm glad he is okay. That is a scary thing to have something wrong with one of your kids and not to know how bad it is. You can definitely tell that he is a trooper he is even smiling in your photos.
Hi I ran across your blog and realized that we are cousins. At least our husbands are. When I asked James if he recognized Brandon he said that he didn't but Jennifer told me they were cousins. I guess I married into the shy part of the family. I glad things turned out okay for his eye.

Poor kid! Funny story, we were at your mom's house Saturday evening and she was telling us about Kaden and then she told about the same thing happening to Brook. Being paranoid about my own kids, Jesi's eyes started turning pink on Sunday and I was pretty concerned, but it is just pink eye! Yea!
